Steeds meer kritiek op Facebook

Facebook lijkt de laatste tijd steeds meer onder vuur te liggen. Niet als het gaat om de applicatie zelf, maar over hoe de organisatie achter Facebook omgaat met leden die zich niet helemaal aan de huisregels houden.
En dan heb ik het vooral over leden die meer dan 5000 ‘vrienden’ willen hebben. Een Canadese vakbondsman is onlangs bijvoorbeeld in de ban gedaan omdat hij te veel ‘vrienden’ had.

and promptly gets himself a ban. That being a ban from Facebook itself – no more profile, no access to the stuff he’s built up, no appeal.

Ik zie zelf behoorlijk veel potentie in het gebruik van Facebook (en andere sociale netwerk tools) ten behoeve van het leren. Maar deze kritiek legt wel de vinger op twee potentieel zwakke plekken:

• Het onderwijs moet continuïteit kunnen garanderen. Lerenden moeten er op aan kunnen dat gemaakte producten niet verloren gaan. Facebook lijkt daar niet in te voorzien. 
  Als je gebruik maakt van Facebook, zul je dus een back up moeten maken van de data.
• Je moet goed weten wat social network sites met informatie over personen doen. Welke garanties geven zij? Vind je dat acceptabel?

Robert Scoble -onlangs zelf ‘slachtoffer- toont inmiddels meer begrip.
Hij heeft de afgelopen week uitgebreid gesproken met de oprichter van Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. Scoble schrijft

Facebook has a limitation on the number of friends a person can have, which is 4,999 friends. He says that was due to scaling/technical issues and they are working on getting rid of that limitation. Partly to make it possible to have celebrities on Facebook but also to make it possible to have more grouping kinds of features. He told me many members were getting thousands of friends and that those users are also asking for many more features to put their friends into different groups. He expects to see improvements in that area this year.

This post sounds fawning, I know. But Zuckerberg demonstrated to me that he is, indeed, the real deal and that the hype he’s gotten over the past year has largely been deserved. He definitely won me over.
